Thoughts on Voting

October 15th, 2010

In several weeks we will all head to the polls to vote in national, state and local elections.  Forme, a lawyer trying to help people that have been victimized by the negligent acts of others, or helping those families dealing witht the tragedy of death due to the negligence of drivers, doctors or  corporations, voting is something that I never miss.  Lately, the attacks on our civil justice system from heavily financed insurance companies, corporations and chambers of commerce have reached a crescendo.  It is imperative as we head to the polls to vote and help elect officials that will protect our rights as citizens and protect the civil justice system we rely on to bring wrongdoers to task for their misdeeds.

Headlines for weeks if not months have been dominated by corporations putting their profits ahead of  consumer safety.   Most noteably, BP causing the worst oil spill in US history, auto manufacturers with runaway cars, pharmaceutical companies selling drugs touted to heal that in fact cause harm, salmonella and other pathogens in our food supply, and yet corporations and their kin continue to pour millions of dollars into ad campaigns to elect candidates sympathetic to their interests and defeat candidates that are trying to stand up for the average citizen.  Now more than ever, we need candidates in office that work to protect the families and consumers.  Don’t be mislead when you hear about “frivolous lawsuits;” demand that the frivolous claims be identified with specificity including the court where the case is/was pending.  Soundbites are not “facts” in this arena and virtually every discussion of frivolous lawsuits and runaway juries are just urban legends  not rooted in truth in any respect.

So go to the polls on election day and vote your conscience!  Whether you vote for the same type of candidate as me is bound to happen if you truly care about truth, justice, your right to a jury trial and your inalienable right to be protected from the negligence of Big Oil, or Big Companies or bad doctors.  Vote–show you care and you intend to do something about it.  See you at the polls!  Glenn Ronaldson
