Boating fatalities in the United States have been reduced over the course of the last 15 years, but still, over the last few years deaths resulting from boating accidents number in the 600-700 range. Many more people are injured in boat accidents every year.

• Negligent maintenance -- The boat is improperly maintained, which results in mechanical failures that could have been avoided.

• Intoxication -- Driving under the influence is no less dangerous in the water than it is on the road.
