BRAIN INJURY
Brain injuries are not isolated instances in the least. Every year, approximately 50,000 people die from traumatic injuries to the brain that have come as the result of an accident of some type. Brain injuries can be caused by a great many things, not the least of which are accidents in vehicles like cars or buses, violent incidents that can happen in the home, workplace, or out amongst the general population, accidental incidents like falls, which can literally happen in hazardous places or anywhere else, and impact caused by recreational activities like sports.
One can sustain a brain injury whether there is a fracture of the skull or not. Sometimes the effects are not diagnosed until much later, depending on the severity and nature of the injury. But the effects can be many. Victims of a brain injury can find that they suffer from irregular sleeping patterns, slurred speech, an inability to recognize faces that would otherwise be familiar, a diminished sex drive, diminished hand-eye coordination, extreme irritability and irrational behavior, sluggishness, bad decision making, shorter attention span, depression, difficulty in moving arms or legs, diminished creative thought, hallucination, memory loss, nausea/vomiting, and much more.
Dealing with brain injury can obviously be difficult. There is a great deal of medical care required, and complex treatment is not uncommon. There is also a tremendous strain on the individual in terms of performing tasks related to employment, or everyday living. Lost wages become a factor, and there is the possibility that entire families are affected, as often the victim needs constant supervision.
If you or a loved one has suffered a traumatic brain injury and you are unsure about what rights you or your family member may be entitled to.
