BUS ACCIDENT

Bus accidents can be a little different from other kinds of accidents, in that they involve an entity called a "common carrier." So what is a common carrier? Well, it is generally a business that is open to the public, for commercial purposes, and is engaged in the business of transporting people from one point to another in exchange for a fee or other kind of compensation. Without the intention of singling them out, Greyhound Lines is a common carrier, because anyone can buy a ticket on a Greyhound bus and go from one place to another using its services. Airlines, train lines like Amtrak, and certain boat transportation services also fall into this category.

As commercial carriers, these services represent to the public that they possess a high degree of skill in the way they transport passengers. Not only that, they also represent that they have appropriate equipment, adequately maintained, and display all due diligence in the way they carry out their tasks. Because of the responsibility of servicing the public, they are required to comply with certain standards that are prescribed by law.

Bus transportation is a potential growth sector, because of high gas prices and congestion in major urban areas. Also, with the modernization of all major airports, bus shuttle services that bring people to terminals from various areas of the parking apparatus, and from the terminal to rental car areas, are a way of life for the traveler.

Bus drivers have to exercise a higher degree of diligence than those operating private vehicles, and because they are in someone's employ, the employer could be ultimately responsible. They are supposed to be properly licensed and trained, but that is not always the case. And acceptable safety considerations should be a part of all these commercial vehicles, but it is not impossible to see them found wanting.

When in a bus accident, there is a very real responsibility on the part of the common carrier to compensate those who have been damaged as a result.
