POLICE BRUTALITY
We obviously all appreciate the job our law enforcement officers do every day across this country. But despite the best efforts by most police departments in terms of training and discipline, there exists an alarming amount of misconduct and police brutality on the part of officers, even in the process of performing their duties. Police brutality entails using excessive force, threats and otherwise extreme behavior that falls outside the law or that which is understood as standard procedure, taking the form of violence, either physical or verbal (verbal threats can constitute an assault).
Police brutality cases often make it to the newspapers and news broadcasts. One of the more well-known instances involves the famous "Rodney King" incident in Los Angeles. Just recently campus police at the University of Florida have faced discipline after apprehending a student who went beyond the allotted time in questioning Senator John Kerry, "arresting" him, and, upon taking him to the ground, shooting him with 50,000 volts of electricity through taser guns.
Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant, was arrested outside a Brooklyn nightclub in 1997, then was sodomized at the precinct station, leading to major physical damage to his bladder and rectum. One of the officers who administered the assault threaten to kill Louima if he told anyone. Louima did what any victim of police brutality should do - he availed himself of the services of an attorney. The ultimate result was an $8.7 million settlement for him.
