SURGICAL ERRORS

Injuries are sometimes caused by surgical errors doctors make during the surgical process. Surgeons are often the most skilled and highly-trained of physicians, and patients who avail themselves of the services of a surgeon place themselves completely in their hands. More often than not, the patient is anesthetized (i.e., put to sleep) prior to this process, which means the patient usually does not know what is happening until it is over. Sometimes a surgical error occurs - and when that kind of mistake is made, it can have devastating and irreversible effects.

Surgical injuries caused by human error leave a scar - both literally and figuratively - that can never be erased. Surgeons are fully expected to follow generally accepted procedures and adhere to certain standards. When these procedures are mishandled and the standards not followed, the surgeon can and should be held accountable for the damage that is caused.

A glaring example of a surgical error happened when an Air Force veteran went into a Veterans Administration hospital for an operation to remove his left testicle, which was thought to be cancerous. The surgeon, who obviously was not diligent, removed the patient's right testicle instead, causing damage to the patient without even addressing the possible illness. Of course, this is an obvious illustration; not all cases are that obvious on the surface.

Cases involving surgical errors are not something for just any attorney to handle. An attorney fighting one of these cases needs to have a familiarity with the entire process to determine where and why problems occurred. In many instances, it involves tracing and analyzing the activities of everyone in the operating room.
